John Smith, Obadiah Mathers, Jechaniah Holcomb, Jonas Case, John Swaney, and George Tryon

Hartford, January 27, 1772. Broke out of the County Goal in this town, the last evening, one JOHN SMITH, who came into this colony a few years since, supposed from the province of new-York, and has resided chiedly at Suffield, where he married a wife, and where, as it is supposed, his principal business has been (with sundry others) counterfeiting money, chiefly the New-Jersey and New-York new Bills, for which he was now convicted before the honourable Superior Court sitting in this place, but has not received his punishment, he was a likely prompt looked youngerly man, some what short of statute, wears his own hair. --- Also, escaped at the same time, one Obadiah Mathers of New-Cambridge, in Farmington, who was committed on an execution of 500l. now recovered against him at said Court, by a young woman for defamation. - - Also, one Jechaniah Holcomb of Simsbury, one Jonas Case of Hebron, and one John Swaney a transient person, last from Chatham, all for debt. - - also, one George Tryon, belonging to Farmington, a young lad committed for want of bail, on a young woman's swearing a child upon him. - Whoever shall take up the said John Smith, and return him to the goal from whence he escaped, shall have a reward of Six Pounds, Lawful Money, and for the said Mathers, Forty Shillings, and for either of the others, Thirty Shillings, per EZEKIEL WILLIAMS, Sheriff.
